Introduction Video

Confused about photography terms like focal length, aperture, shutter speed, depth of field, ISO, and metering? Do you find composition concepts and photographic theories difficult to understand?

"Less is More - Photography" compiles Duncan's learning experiences in photography. It starts with common terminology, using selected works and diagrams to help readers easily grasp the fundamental concepts.

It then introduces basic camera functions, explores photographic elements in depth, and explains composition techniques. The book then covers various photography themes and how to cultivate observation and conceptualization skills.

Finally, it explains common digital post-processing methods and provides ways for advanced self-study. Through eight chapters, it lowers the learning threshold for beginners while engaging advanced photographers with logical thinking.

In this ebook, there are about 100,000 words of text and over 300 photos. Each chapter not only explains the theme but also uses actual photographic works to demonstrate the interplay between shooting ideas and techniques.

This photography toolbook aims to help photography enthusiasts find their own style using the concepts and techniques introduced, presenting their view of the world to others.

Chapter 1: Introduction to Basic Terminology

Beginners often hear many photography-related terms. These terms cover the most basic concepts. This chapter explains common terms such as aperture, shutter, ISO, depth of field, metering, exposure compensation, white balance, and lens focal length.

Chapter 2: Know Your Tools

"To do a good job, one must first sharpen one's tools." Before photographing, one should be familiar with the tools. This chapter introduces functions commonly used in consumer cameras and DSLRs, helping photographers handle their equipment more effectively.

Chapter 3: Mastering the Three Elements

Mastering basic photography involves three main elements: clear focus, beautiful composition, and light control. This chapter shares tips on mastering these elements and the thinking process before shooting.

Chapter 4: Simple Composition

Shares 12 common composition methods. Mastering the spirit of composition lies in capturing the characteristics and focus of the composition, rather than sticking to a specific rule. These explanations help readers improve the maturity and beauty of their works.

Chapter 5: Theme Photography

Through various themes, this chapter shares the thinking, precautions, shooting parameters, and composition rules applied. These works also reflect stories and the photographer's mood.

Chapter 6: Observation and Conception

Photography is about recording noticed elements through equipment and techniques. Observation and conception determine the brilliance of a work. This chapter shares habits for cultivating the "photographer's eye" and factors considered before shooting.

Chapter 7: Digital Darkroom

Post-processing is a basic photography skill that complements pre-production and shooting. It helps express the story we want to tell through our photos, even when shooting conditions aren't optimal.

Chapter 8: Advanced Photography

How to go a step further? This chapter shares ways to self-review shooting results and explore possibilities in photography from various fields and channels.

The eight chapters of this ebook echo each other. The goal is to help readers understand photography theory and concepts and apply them. Gradually, readers will integrate these descriptions into a basic photography overview and improve their mastery of their own work.

Creative Concept

When I first started with a DSLR, photography was just fun. I didn't think much about details. Even with cheap lenses, I felt I couldn't capture the moment. That's when I decided to figure it out. Despite having professional photographer colleagues, I couldn't grasp what they were saying.

I started buying books. But reading theory was frustrating. Terms like focal length, aperture, shutter speed were confusing. I almost gave up.

I told myself not to quit. After two or three years of struggle, I developed habits, interest, and passion. I started taking photography seriously.

Basics are a hurdle. Online resources are plentiful but can be overwhelming. Hard theory is an obstacle, but if you persevere—shoot more, look more, ask more, think more—you will find your way.

Having gone through this, I compiled my understanding, arranging chapters from shallow to deep, to share my techniques and thoughts. I hope this ebook helps others enter the world of photography and enjoy its beauty.
